Yalies of all ages mingled with their Ivy League colleagues at Max’s Taphouse tonight.  Since our last all-Ivy party in December, we added the Princeton and Brown clubs to the list and rounded out our ranks.  The atmosphere was lively and rumor has it the party was still going at 10:30 pm.  Come out and join us at our next event!

Celebrating the annual Yale tradition of partying in the depths of winter, YAAM’s Feb Club event was held this year at the Engineer’s Club in Mount Vernon.  This incredibly beautiful location transported us all back to Yale for an evening as we shared Mory’s gold cups, devoured a delicious build-your-own pasta dinner, and mingled with Yalies young and old.  To top off the night, we hosted a highly competitive game of Yale trivia, with The Frogs besting all the other teams and cruising to victory with the last few questions.  We hope to see you next year!DSC_2637_Crop DSC_2623 DSC_2629 DSC_2618

Two dozen Yalies joined friends from the University of Chicago Alumni Association and other theater-loving patrons to enjoy an exciting and thought-provoking performance of Shakespeare’s As You Like It, produced by Center Stage in residence at Towson University. The audience experienced laughter and intrigue as the all-female cast presented a beautifully-set, ingeniously-scripted version of this romance between Rosalind and Orlando. Prior to the show, our Yale alumni enjoyed an opportunity to mingle with University of Chicago alumni over a delicious lunch at The Orient restaurant. Gavin Witt, BA’89, the Associate Artistic Director and Dramaturg at Center Stage responsible for this re-imagining of As You Like It, gave a masterful pre-performance lecture on the ins and outs of dramaturgy, his approach to Shakespeare, and the commentary on gender roles, identity, and romance conveyed by the non-traditional staging and casting of the show. We hope this is the first of many collaborations to come with Center Stage, Gavin Witt, and the UChicago alumni!DSC_1521-edited DSC_1522-edited

In a historic victory that surprised no one, Yale completely trounced Harvard before the game even started, with a 21-0 victory at the tailgate.  Sadly, the Bulldogs’ reign was short-lived when Harvard took the football field and – after a few minutes of Yale leading gloriously – completely socked our team.

Still, our revelry at the Mt. Washington tavern made for a wonderful afternoon of food, friends, and football.  It’s been a wonderful time pairing up with Harvard for The Game viewing parties.  As they say, keep your friends close and your rivals closer!

YAAM teamed up with the Baltimore Country Club this past Wednesday evening to hear how mathematics – and nerds – have become an integral part of NFL success.  Sandy Weil, the director of football analytics for the Baltimore Ravens, discussed how his degree in mathematics at Yale became an invaluable tool as he built the sports analytics department for the Ravens over the past three years.  After three years with the Ravens, Weil was the first to admit that there is a lot still unknown, such as which data will prove to be useful and which models accurately represent what is happening on the field.  However, data offers new opportunities to understand the sport and the interactions of players on the field.

A big thank you to Sandy Weil for sharing his work with us, and to BCC for graciously hosting our event!

YAAM had the opportunity to host dozens of Yalies at the BSO last night, when Yale Alumni Kevin Puts (a 2012 Pulitzer Prize-winning composer) and Marin Alsop (a MacArthur “genius grant” Fellowship winner) teamed up to create a truly incredible evening of classical and new music.  Yalies brought their friends and families to enjoy a beautiful reception, go on backstage tours of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra building, and meet both Mr. Puts and Maestra Alsop.  It was wonderful to see so many new faces at the reception last night.  We’re continuing to expand our events, so let us know if you have any suggestions for the future!

On February 10th, Yalies and their Ivy League companions gathered at Ryleigh’s Oyster in Mt. Vernon for Feb Club 2015.  While many non-Yalies were shocked at our tradition of partying every night for the month of February (or once a month in our older and wiser years), they were more than happy to partake.  A big thanks to Mike Morris for organizing!
