We will explore the treasures of one of the great rare book and manuscript collections in Baltimore, gathered together by the bibliophile John Work Garrett c. 1890-1945. This incredible collection spans centuries of history, from medieval illuminated manuscripts and books printed by Johannes Gutenberg to one of the 100 surviving copies of the double-elephant folio of Audubon’s Birds of America (you may have seen Yale’s copy on permanent exhibition at the Beinecke Library). We will also look at some unique Yaleiana in the Garrett Library, including autograph manuscripts of each of the four Yalies who were original signers of the Declaration of Independence.
