The Chamber of Wonders and
Jacob Jordaens, Moses and his Ethiopian Wife, 1640s
Special loan to the Walters from the Rubenshuis Museum, Antwerp, Belgium. The commanding life-size image of Moses and his Ethiopian Wife by the important Flemish baroque painter Jacob Jordaens is one of the great enigmas of 17thc European art. Moses is speaking to us as viewers who stand in the place of his brother and sister who have complained about his marriage. So many episodes and figures from the life of Moses are celebrated in European art, but not his Ethiopian wife (Numbers ch. 12). Why? This temporary installation offers a path to an answer in presenting the painting in the context of recently acquired paintings reflecting the growing participation of people of African ancestry in Flemish urban society.
Meet for after-talk drinks (7 – 9 PM) and whatever at TOPSIDE at the REVIVAL HOTEL, 101 W. Monument Street, Baltimore, MD 21201.
