BSO Music Director Marin Alsop is the only conductor to receive the MacArthur “genius grant” Fellowship. As one of Leonard Bernstein’s best known pupils, Alsop is central to his 100th anniversary global celebrations in 2018, including the release of her complete recordings of Bernstein’s works as a box set from Naxos Records. Alsop says:
“Leonard Bernstein was my hero as a child and my mentor as an adult. Like the man himself, his music transcends barriers and breaks boundaries, reminding us of music’s incredible power to speak directly to our souls. Fun, glorious, intense, outrageous, comforting, confrontational, profound… this is the Leonard Bernstein I knew and loved.”
